5 Signs You May Not Be Eating Enough Protein

You’ve probably seen memes that go something like this: (Show tweet with the image of dal sabzi, roti rice with the text)

Our ancestors ate dal, sabzi, and rice every day and turned out absolutely fine. Now : “How much protein is this”?

Us Indians have been eating like this for the longest time, and adding protein doesn’t seem to make that big of a difference and because of that, protein often feels like something only gym-goers care about. But the reality is a little different.

If your meals usually look like a basic plate of rice, roti, and sabzi with very little protein added intentionally, here are a few signs your body might be trying to tell you something.

1. You’re Always Hungry Soon After Eating

Ever finish a meal and still feel like snacking an hour later?

One reason could be low protein intake.

Protein takes longer to digest than carbohydrates, which helps you feel full for longer. A meal with enough protein can help reduce unnecessary cravings and keep your appetite more stable throughout the day.

2. Weak Nails, Hair Fall, and Skin Issues

Sometimes, the answer isn’t another expensive shampoo or nail oil.

Hair and nails are made largely from a protein called keratin, and your body needs enough protein to support its growth and maintenance.

If your diet consistently lacks protein, it may start showing up through brittle nails, increased hair fall, or dull-looking skin.

3. You’ve Been Feeling Irritable or Low on Energy

Snapping at random things lately? Feeling unusually tired or moody for no clear reason?

Your diet may play a bigger role in your mood than you think.

Some studies suggest that adequate protein intake may support the production of serotonin, a hormone associated with mood regulation and emotional well-being.

4. You Keep Falling Sick

Your immune system relies on proteins to build antibodies and immune cells that help your body fight illness.

When protein intake is too low, recovery may feel slower, and your body may struggle more with common infections and fatigue.

5. Constant Muscle Weakness or Soreness

If your body feels sore for too long after workouts or even normal activity, protein could be part of the problem.

Protein plays an important role in muscle repair and recovery. Without enough of it, your body may struggle to recover efficiently, which can lead to prolonged soreness and weakness over time.

So, how much protein do you actually need?

A general guideline is ~0.8g of protein per kg of body weight as a minimum. If you’re active or have fitness goals, your requirement may be higher.

But the key point is this: you don’t need a complete lifestyle overhaul to eat better.

No need to live on protein shakes or boiled chicken. It’s often just about small, consistent choices.

Add paneer to meals, include eggs more often, or simply add a spoon of MyFitness peanut butter to your breakfast. Even a serving of Pro.Fitness high-protein oats on busy mornings can help.

The goal isn’t to obsess over every gram.

It’s simply to become a little more aware of what your body needs and start making small, sustainable changes that fit naturally into your routine.
